After years of litigation, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission has begun issuing dispensary licenses, which authorizes the Board of Medical Examiners to receive applications for permits to become registered, certifying physicians.

Physicians who wish to become certified to recommend medical cannabis must complete a four-hour course related to medical cannabis and a complete subsequent examination, both of which are only offered by the Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA). Every two years after, a certifying physician must complete the two-hour refresher course in order to re-qualify.

“The Medical Association’s Medical Cannabis course gives physicians the education they need to navigate this new area responsibly, with a clear understanding of the law, the science, and their role in protecting patients across our state,” said Mark Jackson, executive director of the MASA.

The course addresses the basics of cannabis, therapeutic implementation, the risks, myths, the relevant laws and rules that govern physicians who intend to certify patient eligibility for medical cannabis, and more.
