Most people associate allergy season with the Spring, but just because the pollen isn’t present doesn’t mean the sniffles aren’t.

Hay fever, despite its name, actually has nothing to do with hay. Ragweed is a common cause of hay fever/allergic rhinitis. Ragweed begins to pollinate in mid-August and will continue provoking allergy symptoms through the fall until a hard freeze. Allergy shots, sublingual allergy drops or dissolvable ragweed tablet are beneficial for patients who struggle with ragweed, helping to build immunologic tolerance to pollen.

Lingering warm weather – Unfortunately in Birmingham, warm weather seems to stick around longer than most surrounding areas. The constant change in weather from hot to cold can interfere with patient’s allergies and asthma. Mold spores can be released when humidity is high or if the weather is dry. Inhaling mold spores can trigger allergic reactions and result in upper respiratory reactions or other symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, itching, or runny eyes.

Fall foliage and yard work – People may be tempted to do some yard work with the cooler temperatures. However, raking leaves or mowing grass can stir up allergens. Those with allergies should wear protective mask while outside during allergy season.

School – Fall also starts the kick off of flu season. Kids and teachers are often exposed to classroom germs. It’s important to make sure kids are washing their hands, covering their mouths while they cough, and staying home if they are sick.

No matter the season, it is important for those with allergies or asthma to be under the care of a board certified allergist. Our allergist can help develop an individualized care plan to help manage allergies or asthma.
